How this calculator works

Closing line value compares the price you got with the price when the game started. The closing line is the market’s best guess, so beating it is the clearest sign you bet good numbers. Strip the vig from both sides of the close to get the fair price, then compare your price with it.

Fair closing chance = no-vig chance of your side at the close
CLV = your decimal odds × fair closing chance − 1

You bet +110. It closed −120 on your side and +100 on the other.

Fair closing odds−109
Fair win chance52.17%
CLV+9.57%

Why does closing line value matter? Results are noisy for hundreds of bets. CLV isn’t. Bettors who beat the close over time almost always win in the long run.

Where do I find the closing line? The last odds before the game starts, ideally from a sharp book. Use both sides so the vig can be removed.

Is CLV the same as EV? It’s your EV measured against the closing price. If the close is right, your CLV is your expected return on the bet.
